Wedges of equal angle are unequal everywhere else: they start as slivers and end as broad bands, so a field of them has a gradient built into it without any tone changing. Move the point off centre and the whole thing turns to face that spot, because unequal wedge widths across the sheet are read as a surface seen at an angle rather than as wedges of different sizes.
