Set circles of equal radius on a triangular lattice whose spacing equals that radius and each one passes through the six centres around it. Nothing else is constructed: the vesica between two circles, the six petals of a rosette, the hexagons and the stars are all leftovers of where the arcs cross. The figure is scratched into a granite column at Abydos and has been redrawn more or less continuously since.
